CDC Study on Adverse Childhood Experiences

A recent study completed by the Center for Disease Control (CDC) on adverse childhood experiences highlights the importance of accessibility to early childhood education. Adverse childhood experiences are, “potentially traumatic events that occur in childhood,” and have been linked with higher risk of cancer, depression and other conditions that can hinder the individual from reaching their full potential.

When adverse childhood experiences can be prevented children are less likely to partake in risky behaviors like heavy drinking and smoking, and are more likely to have increased education and job opportunities.

It is important that as a community we work toward preventing adverse childhood experiences for all of the children in our lives. We can do this by offering support to families that we know are in high stress situations and by assisting organizations and programs that are in place within our communities to help families in these situations.
